Federal Reserve Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction this year during financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
